Regional Desal Implode Begins: Yes, We Warned You

In the mad rush to approve the silly and violently expensive “Regional Desalination” plant in Marina – HOPE warned of the Boondoggle in Waiting. We warned the public through articles, public presentations at City Council meetings and even a special Television presentation. (We also showed off a genuine solution.) Our work was ignored by those in power – until now.

Now . . . you get to read front pages news of —

1. The Marina Coast Water District again unmasked as the Keystone Cops (some prefer “Three Stooges”) trying to hide vital financial information not just from the public – but from one of their own elected Directors.

The only responsible Board member is Jan Shriner who thankfully chose to serve in spite of the outrageous antics of other Marina Coast Board members.

But that’s small potatoes . . .
What few remember is that the clumsy Marina Coast Water District tried to do a desal project before; in 1999. It was a tiny one a mere fraction of the size of the Regional project (50 times larger) they are supposed to manage — and it failed ! Their tiny Desal Failed. That project is now gathering dust and weeds.

2. Steve Collins Financial and Voting “Irregularities” – secretly getting paid big bucks as a private consultant to act in his official capacity as a public official.

(Collins was known for losing a 2004 campaign for County Supervisor of Monterey Peninsula)

All that – just so wealthy developers could get all the water they want.

3. Finally, even the Herald (which for 9 years has fiercely censored and blacklisted a genuine solution !) is questioning the quixotically expensive and out-of-control project. They posed a question of the day in the first week of June asking – should the water project start all over ?

Just so you are prepared – there will be more goofiness as this Boondoggle unfolds.

I predict the Marina Regional Desalination plant will never operate; it will never provide water to our Peninsula. It will fail for the same reasons Marina Coast’s first desal project failed – blind greed compounded with massive incompetence. You heard it here first.

Now it is time to settle down an take a look at the project that has been quietly moving forward to provide us actual water that you can pour into a glass – and (I’m not kidding) . . . drink. :-)

Postscript —

Remember Ghandi’s maxim: First they ignore you, then the laugh at you, then they fight you – and then you win.

HOPE is too familiar with all these steps. But we add one more point – and then those who fought you will try to take credit for all your work. That’s OK – let em. Its vastly more important to have good solutions than to get the proper credit.

A real solution (“the Right-sized” project) by our Water Management District already has had hydrogeological studies done (the Regional Project has no such studies) already has a Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and recently was only $150,000 from completion of the EIR.
