Mammoths (Extinct)

Image

"On the Channel Islands the remains of several hundred mammoths have been found in sea cliffs, exposed by wave erosion (Orr, 1969, p. 31, 35); mammoth remains have also been found at or near the present shoreline in other parts of coastal California. Among the last to disappear was a population of dwarf mammoths (some no more than 4-6 feet tall) on Santa Rosa Island. These may have survived until 8,000 years ago." Gordon, Burton L., 1996. "Monterey Bay Area: Natural History and Cultural Imprints", Boxwood Press, Pacific Grove, California.
