Image Courtesy Calif. Dept Fish & Game This species (Vulpes macrotis mutica) is California listed as Threatened and Federally listed as Endangered. It occupies the Coast ranges from Contra Costa County South to Santa Barbara County. It is known to occur on Fort Hunter Liggett west of the reservoirs. Its estimated population in Monterey County is 567 adults as of 1987 (US-FWS) Most of its activity occurs in annual grassland and gently rolling hills with low densities of brush and trees. Active dens have been observed in annual grasslands and oak woodlands and oak savanna (Jones and Stokes 1990) They hunt at night. Their home ranges overlap and vary in size from 642 acres to 1,285 acres (Morrell 1975). -Salinas Valley Saltwater Intrusion Project DEIR/S Technical Appendices Dec 1990 "The coyote is its primary competitor and predator.
